7 Elements of Design

4 hours (mountian) $40

The elements of design are the fundamental aspects of any visual design which include shape, color, space, form, line, value, and texture. Graphic designers use the elements of design to create an image that can convey a certain mood, draw the eye in a certain direction, or evoke several feelings.

We will look at the seven elements of design and how artists use them in compositions in the art world. You will create an original “sketch” using each of the seven design elements. At least one of those designs will be interpreted into a fused fabric collage. Your completed fabric collage and sketches can be used as reference and inspiration for future works of art.

Deconstructed Screen Printing (Lecture and Demo via Zoom)

Deconstructed screen printing is a process of making a screen with dyes mixed with printing paste, letting it dry and then using printing paste to print or release it onto fabric breaking down the image. Each subsequent print breaks down the original more and more with the thickest portions of colored dye transferring last. The result is a somewhat organic or distressed look and can be quite unexpected.

Finding Myself Floating In Color Soup (Lecture and trunk show)

The story of how I came to develop my design style.

The Importance of Value in Fiber Art (Lecture)

Value is as important as color, but it’s sometimes overlooked. I’ll show you examples of value used well and how it works to draw the viewer’s eye and help tell a story. Learning more about value will help you as an artist create interest in your art and keep people looking.

The Emotions of Color and How to Use Them (Lecture)

Why do we like certain colors or why do some colors make us feel calm and others give us energy. Colors can evoke many feelings including happiness, optimism, melancholy or sadness. This lecture is about our wonderful world of color and how they affect our lives everyday. As artists, we can learn to use color to evoke emotions and help the viewer see and feel what we want them to feel when viewing our art.

Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.
